Vehicle Recycling Manchester

Barlow Street Auto Salvage are an Authorised Treatment Facility that depollutes, processes and recycles End of Life vehicles (ELV). We endeavour to try and minimise the amount of waste generated from the Vehicle Recycling and ELV disposal process, whilst also reducing any adverse environmental impacts during the vehicle dismantling practices.

The car depollution process basically involves the recovery of all positive components and fluids that may be recycled and re-used (e.g. fuels, oils, coolants, ferrous and non-ferrous metal components, etc), and also the removal of all those negative elements of a vehicle that are potentially harmful to the environment (e.g. tyres, mercury switches, airbags, etc).

End of Life Vehicles Recycling Services

END OF LIFE VEHICLE owners are responsible for ensuring they dispose of their End of Life vehicle in accordance with the 2003 ELV Directive. It is important that these vehicles are only destroyed at a registered Authorised Treatment Facility so that their car, van or vehicle can be recycled legally, without causing any harm to the environment.

At present, approximately 75% of an END OF LIFE VEHICLE is recovered (by weight) via the conventional scrap metal recycling process. However, the recycling and recovery targets set by the ELV Directive are far more stringent, aiming for 85% by January 2006 and 95% by January 2015 – and these targets will only be achieved through the increased recycling, recovery and re-use of a vehicle’s components (in other words, by fully de-polluting each vehicle before scrapping it).

Vehicle Dismantler

When a car reaches the end of its useful life it is usually sold to a vehicle dismantler.

The CAR BREAKER or AUTO DISMANTLER will remove spare parts that can be sold for reuse, remove the potentially environmentally polluting materials such as operating fluids oils and batteries, and then sell the hulk on to a shredding operation.

Cars or vehicles that fall into this category could be cars such as MOT FAILURES, INSURANCE WRITE OFFS, VEHICLES WHERE THE COST TO REPAIR MEANS ITS UNECONOMICAL TO KEEP.

All car batteries are removed, cleaned and tested, if they are in good working order they will be sold for reuse the rest are stored safely until ready to be collected for recycling.

Tyre & Wheel Removal

The tyres are removed from the wheels and stored for recycling. The steel or aluminium rims are remelted. We remove any remaining tyres from the vehicle, some tyres aren’t very worn and can be re-used on another vehicle. We perform rigourous tests and measurements to make sure the tyres are safe.

Any worn or damaged tyres are stored and shipped to a specialist handler for disposal

At the depollution bay all fluids are drained safely and enviromentally friendly. Where possible we reuse anything we can and the remainder is stored until they are collected for safe disposal. Liquids that may be hazardous to the environment include engine oil, transmission and hydraulic oils, brake fluids, engine coolants and even windscreen washer solutions are drained from the vehicle.
